our capacity to grow CAN BE FOUND IN OUR INNER RESPONSE TO OUR ENVIRONMENT.

Afterimage Companion (25): Quad Check

A companion to Afterimage 25

In Afterimage 25, I wrote about Mercury Retrograde, how I consider astrology as a mental model, and using Retrograde as a reminder to slow down.

This is an adapted practice that helps me to check in with myself and find out how I’m actually doing. If we engage with ourselves in a quick check-in, we will most likely get one version of how we’re doing. It’s often what our minds want us to believe. This practice allows us to listen to different parts of what makes us unique and is adapted from a foundational practice of the Hoffman Institute, the Quad Check.

An edited transcript of me sharing the Quad Check with my writing partner:

Quad Check: An Energetic Self-Portrait

Give yourself room to breathe, room to observe. What’s happening, what do you notice?

What do you notice In your Body?

What are you feeling?

Give yourself a body scan and notice any sensations: Tension, pain, tingling, coolness, warmth, etc.

“What does this (sensation) tell me? (Sensation), do you have a message?”

Listen for the message. Take it in.

Take a moment and thank it. Say out loud softly, “Thank you, Body.”

What do you notice in your Mind?

What thoughts does your mind hold? Is it fixed on any thoughts?

Ask your mind what it wants you to know.

Listen for the message. Take it in.

Take a moment and thank it. Say out loud softly, “Thank you, Mind.”

What do you notice in your Heart, or Emotional Self?

What feelings does your heart hold?

Ask your heart for a message.

If you are sensing a strong emotion, ask it how old it is.

Listen.

See yourself at that particular age, and slowly guide yourself from that age to your current age.

Take a moment and thank your Heart and/or Emotional Self. Say softly, “Thank you, Heart; thank you, Emotional Self.

What do you notice in that unchanging part of you, the Essence that makes you, You?

Ask your Essence what it wants you to know, “Hey, unchanging part of me that makes me, Me: Do you have a message for me? A sign?”

Listen for the message. Take it in.

Take a moment and thank yourself. Say out loud softly, “Thank you, Essence.”

Give yourself a warm, loving hug.

The Portrait

Take a moment to write down any messages or observations you had. Add this to your morning routine, and continue for two weeks. See what messages emerge over time.

You are a miracle.
